Hyundai 30Beats Remix – Thomas Jones

Thomas Jones

Thomas has been making music for about eight years and even started playing the guitar when he was 13 before discovering the joys of home recording.

Thomas tells us:

“With my remix I tried to strike a balance between acoustic and electronic sounds. I always approach music with a strong melodic idea but love to incorporate non-musical sounds. I used about 18 of the samples, chopping them up and applying various effects. I then added a guitar, bass, keyboard line and vocals.”

Fantastic track; shows real musical ability. The samples you were given are used in such a way that, although they are ‘car sounds’, they compliment the rest of the piece perfectly, becoming their own instruments – this is the way a track should sound in a competition like this.
Combine that with a unique, bass laden melody and you have your winner.
It’s catchy, you can listen to it over and over again without it becoming at all repetitive – it definitely sticks in your mind.
Thus, this track would work exceptionally well in a car advert; Hyundai should definitely pick this.

Obviously got all your mates commenting and voting on this one! Not very innovative…..dull beat, droning vocal track, where are the car sounds? Perhaps work on that beginning, middle and an end basic as it seems you ran out of ideas or time at the end! Bit dull all round really.

Anyone can right a piece of music, and then chuck a couple of car sounds in. The tune is alright, but is it best for the competition?

Sharon Jones

Yes it is!! it’s the only one where the tune sticks in your mind……people will hum along……it’s memorable. Oh and NO not everyone can write a piece of music.

Sammymoo

The piece is ok but it’s not about taste – it wouldn’t be fair if this won as there are not enough car sounds in it.

18 Car sounds used and you say ‘not enough’???….You can do anything you like with the sounds even refining them to make them sound totally different …….It is a sad fact of life that when someone stands out from the crowd and is brave enough to be different, the mob will always try to topple them !!!…….

It’s a bit disappointing that in a competition where there’s lots of talent, something that’s just “ok” can be leading the pack so strongly. Surely the competition would have more weight to it if it were judged (additionally?) by an independent panel who are qualified to judge music videos? Bit of a lazy campaign by Hyundai here.

30Beats
Posted on 8th October, 2009

Hi
Thanks for your comments. I am sorry you think this is a lazy campaign. The reason we have asked people to vote rather than using a expert panel is because we would like to engage with our audience and let them choose their favourite track. The campaign is being promoted to musicians and car lovers alike and is not just targeted at the friends of our contestants. We want to find the nation’s favourite, the track the majority like rather than one selected by two or three individuals – which would also meet its fair share of controversy. We hope that this makes the contest fairer and accept that you can not please everyone.

I’m not attacking this song, which I do think is good, and I congratulate Thomas on it. I merely think there’s a better way to judge something like this. Even X Factor doesn’t solely rely on the public vote. Personally, I’d use the public vote to narrow it down to a top 10 or top 5, then judge it independently on the technical music/video merits.

Call me cynical, but I’m just a bit tired with marketing campaigns that get the public to produce something for them, but then don’t respect the entries enough to judge them properly.

putting everything into consideration….this is the best track out of the lot (personally). simply put, it actually sounds like a song, it’s melodic, it has a good rhythm and beat, and it has soul, this is what gives the car a personality thus connecting it to listeners, and it sticks in your head…whereas other tracks which are good in their own right….don’t seem to connect, repetitive clicks and sounds and reving engines just doesnt cut it for me, and it doesnt make it more ‘authentic’, for the people that say anyone can write a peice of music and chuck a couple of car sounds in are blatantly ignorant, and for the people that say ‘not enough car sounds’, really? i think 18 is quite a substantial amount of car sounds. good luck mr jones!

De Niro
Posted on 10th October, 2009

“Al pacino” has a valid point and I agree with some of the comments on this page regarding the voting process. I really understand why people are frustrated and disapointed. This competition is a cost-effective medium for Hyundai to get an exposure: you guys have worked to create a track… and now you are working for a month to promote it and indirectly promote Hyundai. YOU are generating the buzz. One contestant is bringing a Charity into the equation while another contacts a car magazine resulting in hundreds of extra votes for them in a few days. So in the end the winner of the I30 isn’t the one with the most original creation or even the most friends, but the one that works the hardest to promote hyundai. that’s it.

Posted on 10th October, 2009

A popularity contest as in who has the most friends, NOT necessarily the best song.
I thank 30 beats for explaining but how can the one with the most friends ( and why have voting allowed as 1 per day? 1 per ip addy should suffice- you only need to show once which one you like) ) be displaying what the majority like.=???
I have worked alongside ISP and other big promoters and voting if done this way is to narrow it down to top 5 or 10 then get independant people in to finish it off.
the ISP are actively encouraging companies to ditch the voting comps and if you google their site you will see why.
is voting 1 per IP address? we have seen comps with some having 100′s of aliases, at least decent companies are following this now. and helping to choose winners after voting is done.
wishing that I had entered mine now lol and after listening I KNOW mine wouldnt have been the best BUT I KNOW I would have won and why…………because I could have got 2000 votes a day easy from the site I am on not to mention friends and family (our site has over 100,000 members) so would that have been fair?……not in a million years, would it have been the best on here?….. not in a million years, BUT it would have won on the voting factor alone, where is the fairness in that. goodness at the end of the day I could have stuck anything in and won because I could have got the votes-Years ago voting comps were good but sadly they arnt now. this comp was an excellent idea, many have gone to a lot of trouble and hard work to enter and for what- for i all to be decided by public vote an who has the most friends and contacts, such a shame…

why not let people choose out of the top3 voted by the public then ? and why not stop people registering 50 times as one person ? that is the real thing that stops it being fair, i know thomas jones hasnt got 881 friends or even 440 that logged on twice.

how many people do you think you have coming to this site that are not generated by the people involved ? judging by the number of votes. not that many. i think de niro has it right. a nice business idea for hyundai but not fair for the people involved. its a bit of a silly way of voting because its purely down to how many contacts the people can muster up.

this track has an ok bassline, but the singing is awful!! sounds really amateurish to me, thats what puts me off – it doesnt deliver at the end,

walkingaline
Posted on 11th October, 2009

I feel I have to reply to the moronic comment above.

Before throwing accusations of cheating around, get your maths straight. The competition has been running for 10 days. That’s 880 divided by 10. That equals 88, not 881 or 440. So, that’s 88 friends. I understand having 88 friends might be a bit of a stretch for you, but…

And that’s also not taking into account the huge number of negative 1-star votes I received during the first few days of the competition!

I’d also like to think that nobody would be so stupid as to set up multiple e-mail accounts for the purpose of registering and voting in this competition. Surely it would be easy for the organisers to check out the date that an email account was created…

junkiepixie
Posted on 11th October, 2009

Well done Mr Jones, it’s a great track.

As for the competition being about how many friends you can get to vote…it’s not that big of a deal. To those who are having kittens over it, just sit down have a cuppa. Maybe go for a walk – chill. Reassess the things you get mad about. Like the fact that a man who looks like a sad ballsack is running the country without having been elected. Now that is cheating.

Before throwing accusations of cheating around, get your maths straight. The competition has been running for 10 days. That’s 880 divided by 10. That equals 88, not 881 or 440. So, that’s 88 friends. I understand having 88 friends might be a bit of a stretch for you, but…

well, thankyou for that maths class. i cant say i have 88 close friends really, no.

And that’s also not taking into account the huge number of negative 1-star votes I received during the first few days of the competition!

before throwing accusations of cheating around, get your maths straight. 1 is not a negative number, i dont know where you were taught but in my world you have to go below zero to get into the negative. perhaps these people who voted you 1, just didnt like your track. ever occur to you ?

I’d also like to think that nobody would be so stupid as to set up multiple e-mail accounts for the purpose of registering and voting in this competition. Surely it would be easy for the organisers to check out the date that an email account was created…

the date !? whats that got to do with it ? (do you mean the date an actual email account is created or are you referring to the login here?) if you are talking about an email account then 30beats or anyone else has no clue when it was created, your information after all should be secure in an email account from yahoo or similar) also just because an email account is created on a certain date means absolutely nothing.

if i was judging it i would be looking at ip addresses and patterns of voting. if 1 ip address constantly votes for one person and that ip address is using multiple accounts then its either a big house full of people or someone is using multiple accounts to vote themselves up. im not actually sure that 30beats even care about this – be interested to know if so (30beats?) – is it against your terms to use multiple accounts? if it is indeed a popularity contest then does that include friends making multiple accounts ? how do you hope to enforce this ?

if multiple accounts are allowed and its just a question of who can be bothered to make the most i assume this could be abused quite easily.

Nice track, and definitely catchy . However, personally I felt a bit let down when the car sounds that were prominent at the beginning got drowned out by everything else. I’m not that familiar with the rules but, even though 18 were used, this just sounds like a good track made with very few car samples

Posted on 12th October, 2009

To be honest, I really like the track but It is definitely not the best on here. I agree with Pos n that it does sound fairly amateur (that is simply some constructive critisism i dont want to offend anyone). With some tweaking I think the production could be improved and I think the track would be brilliant.

Personally, on hearing about the competition by chance and, not knowing anyone involved, I think Colins is the best. But this one is also very good.

But like people have said, it doesn’t really matter how good your track is. you could upload a recording of yourself shitting and still win if you tried hard enough lol

good luck tom

Posted on 12th October, 2009

pos51 – Yeah, 1/5 is a NEGATIVE response from someone who, as you put it, ‘just didn’t like’ the track. Not a negative number… a negative response. That’s how the competition works. You can’t get a negative number on a 1-5 scale. Well done….

Jaskill

pos51 – Your inability to understand context of language undermines your own argument. Jaskill has said what needs to be said about that.

But if you knew that the competition was being judged on average star rating for the first few days, you would have realised that when people voted 1 star, it brought the mean total down. So no, people may not have ‘just not liked the track’, they might have been sabotaging his average rating in order to give themselves/their friend a better chance. Have you not noticed that since the voting changed to ‘total star votes’, everybody’s average rating has increased substantially?

‘Your inability to understand context of language undermines your own argument. Jaskill has said what needs to be said about that.’

what is negative about voting a 1 ? its just a scale from 1-5 nothing negative about it. hence the feigned confusion. by saying that im negative for voting a 1 on this track you are denigrating my decision, i wasnt feeling negative when i voted a 1 i genuinely either vote 5 or 1 :)

‘Christ pos51 get over it, leave the copy and paste alone, you clearly have no taste, I dont know Tom im not in that 88 you keep talking about. the whole track is good, start to finnish, which is obviously why people are voting for it. If your this angry now, how angry are you going to be when he wins?’

i have no taste ? heh heh. youll have to get over the fact that i have a much better ear for music than you, and thats why i can mix music really well and my record collection contains all sorts of gems that you have never heard of, listen son, if i was angry youd know about it. i was simply questioning the cheating i mean voting process.

nope :) stop commenting on my posts! you are doing nothing constructive by being petty like this, you are just showing yourself to be a moron.

‘But if you knew that the competition was being judged on average star rating for the first few days, you would have realised that when people voted 1 star, it brought the mean total down. So no, people may not have ‘just not liked the track’, they might have been sabotaging his average rating in order to give themselves/their friend a better chance. Have you not noticed that since the voting changed to ‘total star votes’, everybody’s average rating has increased substantially?’

yeah ive studied the graphs and it looks funny to me. so now the competition has changed nobody is doing any dodgy voting right ? theyre not making multiple accounts and 5 starring their friend over and over right (which is just the same as voting someone else a 1 really – same cheating) i want to hear what 30beats have to say about this ?

I love to vote for Tom. It makes me feel like im contributing to society. Also i like how it sounds a bit like Dizzee Rascal

Posted on 12th October, 2009

Jeez pos51, you are actually stupid.

I’m not saying that you felt negative when you voted a 1, or that voting a 1 equals voting a negative number… I can’t believe it’s even come to this… but straight from Dictionary.com

Negative definition number 6 – “lacking in constructiveness, helpfulness, optimism, cooperativeness, or the like e.g. a man of negative viewpoint”. This definition = voting a 1.

And dodgy voting will always happen. But you can’t just sit around and moan about it all day. If your in a competition you play by the rules, nothing else. Colin has pledged to give the money he makes off his current car to charity if he wins – nothing to do with the competition but it’s helping him get votes, props to him. If you are in a competition and are playing by the rules enforced, what’s the problem? Why don’t you email 30beats instead of pointlessly arguing on this page?

woo woo kidderz! here comes the clue train! last stop is you!

you surprise me being able to operate a dictionary,

‘…dodgy voting will always happen. Why don’t you email 30beats instead of pointlessly arguing on this page?’

as the sex pistols once famously said ‘the problem is you’ – what i was asking for was 30beats to clarify the rules as they have done already once on this page, but i guess understanding that is beyond your feeble mind, although you admit dodgy voting will always happen, if it *is* happening i want to know what 30beats are going to do about it ! (that was the point – woo woo!)

Stop using Thomas’ page to hurl abuse at each other. Not cool.

Woo woo. Well instead of waiting for a reply on this page, just continue to vote each day that you visit, email 30beats in order to get a quicker response and sit back and chill (Eugene’s entry will help you do this). Your petty arguing isn’t going to change the rules, my petty arguing isn’t going to make them keep the rules the same – if they want to change the rules, they’ll do it anyway. Abuse hurling ceased.

All these comments…. That was a really good read! But for me the one that sums all this up is Deniro on the 10th of October. Well done Hyundai on an excellent marketing campaign but one thing is for sure, the best track will not win this competition as Deniro said it will be won by who works hardest to promote Hyundai….

Time!!

Thank you Pos51, It’s been a very interesting session. Wow! We are really progressing here. But what have we learnt today? We have learnt that there is no need to scream to be heard. Also remember to believe in yourself a little bit more. Confidence is key to a future success, and as soon as we tackle your inferiority complex, you will have the power to shine and inspire people around you! I promise.

Now go home, take those little pills I gave you and I’ll see you again next Tuesday. :)

“youll have to get over the fact that i have a much better ear for music than you, and thats why i can mix music really well and my record collection contains all sorts of gems that you have never heard of”

pos51. You appear to be a person who is confused about knowing what music you like, and actually knowing anything about music. Could you, without referring to Google, identify what Ave Verum K614 is? Hint: A lot of your super rare records wouldn’t be here without its innovation. Go ahead and Google. *sigh*

What appears most disturbing is that in all your time amassing a record collection (excuse us while we reel in awe), which has by some miraculous feat given you a talent for mixing, you have clearly not learned any punctuation or grammar that is usually mastered by key stage 1.

It’s quite an important factor if you wish to convey any authority when asserting facts as you know them. Although your spelling of ‘Shakespeare’s’ is quite cute.

A talent is natural – it is not gained by sitting in your bedroom, getting greasy palmed over a record that you have bought that none of your friends have heard of. Probably for good reason. (Note the word ‘probably’. If I didn’t use it I would sound like an arrogant music bore…ring any bells?)

So you have an ‘ear for music’? What does that mean exactly? And what is there to ‘get over’? As long as you’re not deaf, I think everyone with a device or system to play it can ‘have an ear’ for what it sounds like. And even then Beethoven got along just fine by the sound of his later symphonies. In that context, your statement is entirely redundant.

“good job, you should get a nobel prize” (Capital ‘n’ there by the way.)

You also seemed to have dodged enough in the way of abstract thought or ‘learning’ to know that sarcasm is the lowest form of wit. Using it in riposte is the argumentative equivalent of pond life, or being a ‘bottom feeder’. Then again you could be 9 years old, which would award you some compensation.

If you want to criticise the efforts of another, at least try not to come across like an adult. And be constructive while you’re at it.

Good luck again Tom,
JP

It seems to be impossible to give an opinion about the work of Thomas Jones without being called “jealous” or “sore loser” by a militia of loyal fans… Fair enough, Friendship is a beautiful thing. Well, Tom is sitting on top of a mountain of votes and I’d love to post what I objectively think about his tune but it’s too intimidating and I don’t want to be verbally jumped by you guys, so I’ll just say this: Tom’s track is a flawless symphonic gem and a rhythmic phenomenon. It’s a tsunami of talent. A musical Apocalypse for your senses and your soul. It’s a miracle. A revelation. It’s music for the Gods! :)

And Tom – your entry is by far the best. Those on here, such as pos51, are jealous.

actually nikkys track is the best submitted. it has originality and freshness which toms does not, and i favour that in music more than stuff that sounds like other stuff youve heard before. to suggest im jealous of some amateur who has given a free track to a pr company is utterly ridikled onions.

Well unlucky Thomas. We both had a chance until recently, but the new 30 beats news spells the end for me. I am going to tell my friends not to waste their time and enjoy the weekend.

You are probably as perplexed as i about the rise of Vantage. He obviously had a technique that they could not prove was cheating, or had a better strategy than us. I thought it would be the person with the most mates that won at the start. Well that wasn’t true was it? It’s just a shame that i thought his tune was poor.

Not sure if this has been a positive marketing campaign for Hyundai or not. Everyone except Vantage is probably a bit pissed off at the moment.

“Where’s kidderz?” Here I am! I generally just voted throughout the month without commenting but you pushed me over the edge! Gutted for Tom, we all did the best we could but Nicky had a pretty sweet tune and some mad promotional skills as well by the looks of it.

Can you blame a group of friends for supporting their mate and defending him against idiotic comments? I’m sure you would’ve been the same pos51. Grats to Nicky, grats to Colin (who had my favourite track on here) and unlucky Tom…
